The U.S. Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), will be christened on Saturday, and Ward Leonard CT LLC in Thomaston, CT is celebrating the company’s contribution to the ship’s construction. With a workforce of 140 men and women, Ward Leonard supplied motor controllers, automatic bus transfer switches (ABTs), pushbutton stations, and a variety of motors which drive pumps and fans to the construction of the largest, most powerful, and most technologically advanced ship ever built.

Ford’s christening marks the accomplishment of years of construction and design and countless man hours. Ward Leonard is part of a vital defense industrial base consisting of more than 2,000 small, mid-sized, and large businesses from 46 states that provides parts and services for Ford-class carriers.

Ford is the first new carrier design in 40 years and reflects concepts and technologies matured during 100 years of U.S. Navy carrier operations. The ship will soon take its place in the nation’s carrier fleet, where it will continue the legacy of air power “from the sea” as the cornerstone of U.S. military supremacy around the globe. Ford’s design will enable it to adapt to the ever-changing requirements necessary to support carrier aviation well into the future.

Michael Clute, President of Ward Leonard, said, “Our skilled workforce, our committed team of suppliers and our community are proud to be part of an American manufacturing feat that built a U.S. Navy ship designed for efficiency and ready to answer our Nation’s call in the future. The christening is the culmination of tireless work by dedicated men and women who take great pride in what they do.”

Gerald R. Ford will be able to launch 25 percent more flight missions, its design will reduce necessary maintenance by 30 percent, and will save the U.S. Navy a projected $4 billion over Ford’s 50-year life span.

“I take great pride in knowing that many Connecticut manufacturers like Ward Leonard have played such an integral role in the extraordinary effort leading to this historic christening. Through tremendous hard work and innovation, Connecticut manufacturers are leading the way in strengthening our nation's security and boosting our state's economy,” said Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-5).
